Car Registration Cost Calculator

Estimate annual car registration costs by state, including CTP/greenslip where bundled.

Some states base rego on cylinders, weight, or tare mass

kg

Used in states that charge by weight (VIC, SA)

How It Works

The calculator looks up base registration fees for the selected state, adjusting for vehicle type, engine size or weight as required by that state's fee schedule. Where CTP is bundled with registration (QLD, VIC, ACT, SA, TAS, NT), an estimated CTP component is included. For NSW and WA where CTP is separate, only the rego component is shown. Fees are shown for your selected period.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does car rego cost in Australia?

Typical annual rego for a 4-cylinder car: QLD ~$750-800, NSW ~$700-800 (plus CTP separately), VIC ~$850-950, WA ~$650-750, SA ~$500-600. Costs vary by vehicle size, weight, and whether CTP is bundled (QLD, VIC, ACT, SA, TAS, NT) or separate (NSW, WA).

Which state has the cheapest registration?

South Australia and the Northern Territory tend to have the lowest overall rego costs. However, you must also factor in CTP/greenslip costs. When CTP is included, QLD and SA generally come out cheapest for standard passenger vehicles.

Can I pay rego in instalments?

Most states offer 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month registration periods. Shorter periods cost slightly more per month due to admin fees. Some states offer direct debit payment plans. In NSW, you can pay your CTP greenslip separately from rego.

Do electric vehicles pay rego in Australia?

Yes. EVs pay normal registration fees. Some states previously offered rego discounts for EVs, but most have now introduced or are planning road-user charges (per-km levies) for EVs to replace lost fuel excise revenue.
