Employees over 45 with 2+ years of service get an extra week of notice

How It Works

The calculator looks up the NES minimum redundancy pay scale based on years of continuous service, and multiplies the applicable number of weeks by the employee's base weekly pay rate. It also calculates the notice period entitlement (1-5 weeks based on service length, plus 1 week if over 45 with 2+ years service). The total payout combines redundancy pay and notice pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is redundancy pay calculated in Australia?

Under the Fair Work Act, minimum redundancy pay is: 1 year = 4 weeks, 2 years = 6 weeks, 3 years = 7 weeks, 4 years = 8 weeks, 5 years = 10 weeks, 6-7 years = 11-12 weeks, 8-9 years = 13-14 weeks, 10+ years = 12 weeks. Based on the employee's base rate of pay for ordinary hours.

No. Redundancy pay under the NES applies to employees of businesses with 15 or more employees. Small businesses (fewer than 15 employees) are exempt from NES redundancy pay. Casual employees and those employed for less than 12 months are also not entitled. Some awards may provide different entitlements.

What else do I get paid on redundancy?

In addition to redundancy pay, you're entitled to: payment in lieu of notice (1-5 weeks depending on service and age), accrued annual leave, accrued long service leave (if eligible), and pay for any hours worked in the final pay period.

Can my employer reduce redundancy pay?

An employer can apply to the Fair Work Commission to reduce redundancy pay if they find the employee other acceptable employment, or cannot afford to pay the full amount. The Commission assesses each case on its merits.
