Public Holiday Planner
See all public holidays and long weekends for your state for any year.
How It Works
The calculator lists all national and state-specific public holidays for the selected year and state. It identifies long weekends (where a holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, or adjacent to a weekend), and suggests optimal leave-taking strategies to maximise consecutive days off using minimal annual leave days.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many public holidays does Australia have?
There are 8 national public holidays. Each state adds 1-3 additional state/territory holidays. Total per state ranges from about 10-13 per year. If a public holiday falls on a weekend, the following Monday is usually declared the substitute public holiday.
Which state has the most public holidays?
The ACT and Tasmania tend to have the most public holidays (around 12-13). Queensland has 11-12 including Royal Queensland Show (Brisbane region only). Victoria has 11-12 including Melbourne Cup Day (metro only).
When should I book leave for long weekends?
The best long weekend strategies: take the Friday before or Monday after Easter (already a 4-day weekend in most states), bridge Anzac Day (April 25) with a weekend, and the days between Christmas and New Year. Taking 4 days of leave around Easter can give you 10 consecutive days off.
