How It Works

The calculator uses the US Navy body fat formula. For men: 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76. For women: 163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387. All measurements in centimetres. The result is classified into standard body fat categories.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men: essential fat 2-5%, athletes 6-13%, fitness 14-17%, acceptable 18-24%, obese 25%+. For women: essential fat 10-13%, athletes 14-20%, fitness 21-24%, acceptable 25-31%, obese 32%+. Women naturally carry more body fat.

How accurate is the US Navy method?

The US Navy formula is accurate to within about 3-4% of methods like DEXA scanning. It's most accurate for average body types and less reliable for very lean or very muscular individuals. It's a good free estimate — DEXA scans cost $50-$150 in Australia for precise measurement.

Is waist circumference important?

Yes. The Australian government health guidelines flag increased health risk at waist circumference above 94cm for men and 80cm for women, and substantially increased risk above 102cm for men and 88cm for women, regardless of BMI.
