How It Works

Tip amount = bill x (tip percentage / 100). Total = bill + tip. Per person = total / number of people. If rounding is selected, the per-person amount is rounded up to the nearest dollar or $5, and the new total and tip are recalculated accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip in Australia?

Tipping is not expected or required in Australia — service workers receive a fair minimum wage. If you want to reward good service, 5-10% is generous. Some restaurants add a surcharge on weekends and public holidays (10-15%) which is not a tip.

Is tipping different in Australia vs the US?

Very different. In the US, tips of 15-20% are expected because servers are paid below minimum wage. In Australia, the minimum wage is much higher (currently $24.10/hour for adults) and tipping is entirely optional.

What are restaurant surcharges in Australia?

Many Australian restaurants add surcharges on Sundays (10%), public holidays (10-15%), and sometimes Saturdays (5-10%). Some add a credit card surcharge (1-2%). These are separate from tips and are legal if clearly disclosed on the menu.
