Cooking Measurement Converter

Convert between cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, millilitres, grams, and ounces for cooking.

Required when converting between volume and weight

How It Works

For volume-to-volume conversions, the calculator uses standard metric conversion factors (1 AU cup = 250 mL, 1 AU tbsp = 20 mL, 1 tsp = 5 mL). For volume-to-weight and weight-to-volume, it applies the density of the selected ingredient (e.g. flour ~0.6 g/mL, sugar ~0.85 g/mL, water 1.0 g/mL). The result is rounded to a practical cooking precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Australian cup the same as a US cup?

No. An Australian metric cup is 250 mL. A US cup is approximately 236.6 mL. An Australian tablespoon is 20 mL (4 teaspoons), while a US tablespoon is 15 mL (3 teaspoons). This matters when using American recipes in Australia.

How many grams is a cup of flour?

One Australian cup (250mL) of plain flour weighs approximately 150g. Self-raising flour is similar at about 150g. Wholemeal flour is about 160g per cup. These are approximate — flour density varies with how packed it is.

Why do I need to specify the ingredient?

Volume measurements (cups, mL) and weight measurements (grams, ounces) are different things. A cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of sugar because they have different densities. The ingredient selection applies the correct density for accurate conversion.
