Timber Calculator

Calculate timber pieces, lengths, and cost for framing, decking, fencing, and other projects with waste factor.

m

Total wall length, floor length, or fence length

Wall height, floor width, or joist span

How It Works

Calculates the number of pieces based on total length divided by spacing, plus one (e.g., a 10m wall at 450mm centres needs 23 studs). Multiplies by the piece length (wall height or span). Adds the waste factor and multiplies by cost per lineal metre for the total estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What spacing for wall studs in Australia?

Standard stud spacing is 450mm or 600mm centres under the National Construction Code (NCC). 450mm is used for most residential walls. 600mm is acceptable for non-load-bearing internal walls and where sheet cladding allows it.

What size timber for wall framing?

Standard residential wall framing uses 90x45mm (or 70x45mm for non-load-bearing). Top and bottom plates are the same size. For load-bearing walls or two-storey construction, 90x45mm or larger is typically specified by the engineer.

How much does framing timber cost in Australia?

Treated pine framing (90x45mm) costs approximately $4-$7 per lineal metre. Prices vary by region, supplier, and treatment level. Bulk orders from timber yards are cheaper than retail (Bunnings).

What timber treatment do I need?

H2 for internal framing protected from weather. H3 for outdoor above-ground (decks, fences). H4 for in-ground contact (posts, retaining walls). H5 for in-ground in high-risk areas. H6 for marine use.
