How are pregnancy weeks calculated?
Pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), not from conception. This means at conception you are already considered 2 weeks pregnant. A full-term pregnancy is 40 weeks (280 days) from LMP.
What are the trimester dates?
First trimester: weeks 1-12. Second trimester: weeks 13-27. Third trimester: weeks 28-40. Each trimester brings different developments and symptoms.
When should I tell my employer I am pregnant?
Under Australian law, you must give your employer at least 10 weeks notice before your expected parental leave start date. Many women wait until after the 12-week mark when miscarriage risk decreases significantly.
What is the paid parental leave in Australia?
As of 2024-25, the Australian Government Paid Parental Leave scheme provides up to 22 weeks at the national minimum wage (increasing to 26 weeks by 2026). Both parents can share the leave. Check Services Australia for eligibility.
